LUUMS Symphonic Choir 2023/24

Symphonic Choir is a non-auditioned mixed voices ensemble open for anyone to join.

Our choir is a friendly environment where we hope to bring together people who love to sing, no matter their previous experience in a choir. We mainly sing a classical repertoire, covering both sacred and secular works; last year this involved Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols', Bruckner's 'Locust Iste' and Fauré's 'Cantique de Jean Racine'. This coming year we have a range of repertoire planned, shining a light on female composers and British music. We perform in 3 concerts per year as part of lUUMS' termly concert series, with other performance opportunities such as carol singing.

So come and join us on Thursdays in the School of Music from 5-7pm. And come with us on our weekly trip to Terrace after rehearsals where we can all have a chat and get to know each other better. We hope to see you there!

Annis Archer (she/her)

Conductor

Annis is in the final year of her Integrated Masters in Music and Music Psychology. She started playing both the piano and cello around the age of 7 and continued her musical studies at The City of Edinburgh Music School for 6 years. Outside of school, she was involved in The Edinburgh Youth Orchestra for 2 years, which toured throughout Scotland. Annis also joined the National Youth Choir of Scotland, where she sang for 10 years, performing for the BBC on both television and radio. During her last years of school, Annis taught children music at Edinburgh Young Musicians and began to teach private piano lessons as well, continuing this on her gap year in South Africa. She has really enjoyed her time in LUUMS over the past 3 years, being both Symphonic Choir Manager (21/22) and Secretary (22/23).  She’s looking forward to conducting the choir she loves and developing her conducting skills further. Outside of music, Annis enjoys getting outdoors on walks with her dog Stanley, cooking and watching crime dramas.

Ceren Abbatt (she/her)

Manager

Ceren is a second year BA Music student from Hampshire. She has been in several choirs for over 10 years now, giving her the opportunity to sing in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Cadogan Hall and Wembley Arena as well as going on music tours to both Italy and Spain. With her choir at home, Ceren competed in the European Choir Games in Sweden in 2019, winning gold medals in both categories the choir was entered into. In the same year, they also travelled to Switzerland to perform a mass by John Rutter in the Sion Festival of Music. While her main instrument is voice, she also dabbles in a bit of piano. Outside of music, Ceren enjoys yoga and netball, day trips in and around Leeds and a good pub! She has loved being in Symphonic Choir for the last year and is super excited to be managing the choir for the next year.

Hi everyone, I'm Stella and I'm going into my third year as an English and Music student. I'm originally from Nottingham and I'm part of Luums as a singer and I also play the clarinet. I'm looking forward to managing Symphonic Choir as I have been a member since my first year meaning I have developed some exciting ideas as to promoting ourselves, socials and running the sessions.
