LUUMS Concert Band 2023/24

LUUMS Concert Band is one of the non-auditioned ensembles with around 45 members of brass, wind and percussion players. Concert band plays a wide range of repertoire, including film music, wind band classics, classical pieces and pop music. Examples from last year are Hazo’s Arabesque, Stephenson’s Rocket by Hess, and a medley from Hairspray. The band is very welcoming and friendly to musicians of all abilities and backgrounds. There is a variety of parts to cater for all standards whilst still making a great and high-quality sound. There are three main concerts throughout the year, as well as doing busking around Christmas time. After every rehearsal there is a trip to Old Bar, but drinking is very much optional and we want everyone to feel included and welcome. There are other socials throughout the year, for example laser tag, games night and bowling. The band also participates in LUUMS-wide events such as the Ball and Intro Party. Concert band has a fun, relaxed atmosphere and we would love to see you there!

Matt Boucher (he/him)

Conductor

Matt is a final year MEng Medical Engineering student from an ancient medieval town in East Kent, which some of you might recognise as the spiritual home of the Sandwich! From his first tentative steps on the piano and recorder at primary school, Year 4 Matt thrived attempting to play whatever instrument he could get his hands on! After settling on the clarinet, allegedly due to a few ‘teething problems’ postponing his trumpet debut, he enjoyed contributing his woody, occasionally squeaky, sound for many years in concerts and on tour to France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with his school orchestra. Somewhere along the way he finally gained a full set of adult teeth and started tooting new and exciting instruments from the brass section including trumpet in secondary school plus french and tenor horn whilst at uni! He’s had a blast ever since playing in a variety of LUUMS ensembles including Concert Band, Brass Band, Sinfonia, Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, alongside performing twice in the National Universities Brass Band, and playing regular gigs with the Arrhythmics and Jazz and Blues Society, plus the occasional bit of pit work! After learning all the ‘baton-waving stuff’ from a good mate whilst riding a bike one-handed along a canal, he’s loved every minute of conducting Sinfonia for the past two years and is now looking forward to working with Tommy to achieve a quality wind-band sound in Concert Band! Outside of his musical engagements, you might just find Matt attempting to run a ‘casual’ marathon, ‘inter-city’ cycling across the north, or down one of Leeds’ many drinking establishments after rehearsals! If you happen to live near York, you might also spot him playing at your local bandstand once in a while or busking jazz standards down Briggate or St Helen's Square!

Tommy Worth

Conductor

Tommy is a second year Aerospace Engineering student from London. He picked up the trumpet at the age of eleven and joined various school ensembles, including the Christ's Hospital Marching Band. With them, he has marched and played at many events, including the Lord Mayor's Show, Brighton Children's Parade, and even leading the People's Procession past the Cenotaph and Buckingham Palace on Remembrance Sunday 2018. Since arriving at Leeds in 2022, he has enjoyed playing with various ensembles within the music society and now looks forward to conducting Concert Band with Matt.

Alex Kent (she/her)

Alex is a second year geography student from Brighton. Having played french horn since she was 10, she has been involved in a variety of ensembles at home, including the Brighton and Hove Youth Wind Orchestra and the Brighton and East Sussex Youth Orchestra. Since coming to Leeds she has been a part of Sinfonia, concert band and (occasionally) brass band. This year she has enjoyed the post rehearsal old bar trips and is looking forward to enthusiastically encouraging both old and new members to come along each week.

Lucy Pullan (she/her)

Manager

Lucy Pullan (she/her) is a third year joint honours Music and English student from North Yorkshire. She began playing clarinet around age 8, because she was too small to play saxophone. She quickly fell in love with playing, and at age 11 she began teaching herself piano, and finally picked up the saxophone aged 14. Music because more and more important to her, playing in various orchestras and bands when growing up. She has performed in the Sage in Gateshead, as well as going on tour in Germany and Prague and has participated in NYO Inspire days. She achieved her ARSM diploma on clarinet in 2021. As part of her degree, she studies performance on clarinet, her preferred instrument. Lucy loves being an active member of LUUMS and enjoys playing in pit bands whenever she possibly can. During her second year she played in the symphony and symphonic wind orchestras on clarinet, and was leader of the saxophone section in concert band. She is looking forward to becoming manager of concert band and joining Alex, Matt and Tommy.
