LUUMS CONCERT BAND

Concert Band is one of the non-auditioned ensembles within LUUMS, performing a variety of genres ranging from film scores to wind band classics. The band is compiled of brass, woodwind and percussion players of all abilities. The pieces played in Concert Band contain a mixture of parts so there are opportunities for everyone to play confidently. Concert Band has a relaxed vibe, catering to those who want to play for fun and make new friends while still performing high quality music.

Concert Band performs regularly throughout the year. These performances include concerts as part of the LUUMS concert series across both terms, some busking at Christmas all through Leeds City Centre and the ensemble showcases, where we perform with all the other non-auditioned ensembles within LUUMS.

Concert Band is proud to have large involvement with a diverse membership across all academic disciplines.

After every rehearsal, there is a relaxed trip to Old Bar, where band members can socialise. Other social highlights of the year include an annual summer BBQ, a festive Christmas party and activities such as Trampolining and trips to Laser Quest. We also participate in wider LUUMS socials which take place throughout the year, including an annual ball and live music events.

Concert Band rehearsals have now started but don't worry if you have missed the first couple, just come along and play!

Jo Fountain (she/her)

Conductor

Jo is from Buckinghamshire and although she’s now finished her Music and Maths degree, she loves Leeds and LUUMS too much to leave! Originally a saxophonist, she picked up the bassoon at the beginning of sixth form and the cornet only last year. She has played in many orchestras and windbands both at home and university, including the Bucks Youth Wind Ensemble and Bucks County Youth Orchestra. Last year in LUUMS she was part of Sinfonia, Concert Band, Brass Band and Symphony Orchestra, and loved them all! She thoroughly enjoyed being a manager of Sinfonia over the last two years and is excited to be joint conductor of Concert Band this year. Outside of LUUMS Jo is part of the Ballet, Modern Dance and Archery societies and when not surrounded by music, you will find Jo with a cup of tea and a good book.

Ashruta Uttara Mani (she/her)

Manager

Ashruta is a second year music student from Chennai, India. She started off playing the drums at 16 to become a rock drummer, but eventually branched out to specialise in solo marimba. She tried orchestral percussion for the first time in LUUMS last year. She played for Concert Band and SWO in the first semester and enjoyed it so much that she went on to join Symphony Orchestra and Brass Band as well!

As a percussionist, Ashruta frequently arranges music for herself on solo marimba and is looking forward to using this skill for the ensemble. Although she primarily performs contemporary classical music, she loves listening to heavy metal in her spare time (and might even try to make an arrangement or two for Concert Band!)

Dom Francis (he/him)

Conductor

Dom is a 4th year Maths student from St Helens, Merseyside. Originally growing up playing the piano, he started playing the trombone when he was 15 and has played with various brass bands including St Helens Youth Brass Band and Skelmersdale Prize Band. In LUUMS, he has been a member of Brass Band and Concert Band for the last three years and has also played in most of the other ensembles. He enjoyed managing Concert Band so much last year that now he wants to conduct the band and continue helping to run the society that has been such a big part of his university life.

Alex Packer (she/her)

Manager

Alex is a second year politics, philosophy and economics student who’s first instrument was the guitar. She soon found her main instrument, the flute as she wanted to participate in orchestras and wind bands. At home in Buckinghamshire Alex played in Concert Band, Flute Choir and Youth Orchestra at the Chiltern Music Academy and enjoyed them all, going on tour to Vienna and the Isle of Wight!

Since coming to Leeds Alex has joined Concert Band and Sinfonia and is an huge advocate of encouraging people to just come along and give it a go, even if you feel you’ve gotten out of touch with your instrument. Alex cannot wait to get more stuck in at Concert Band as manager this year, give back to a group that’s brought her so much joy and maybe even have a go at a new instrument!
