LUUMS Chorus 2023/24

We are LUUMS Chorus, one of the non-auditioned choirs within the music society. Our choir is open to all; no matter the choral ability, come and give one of our rehearsals a go, there’s something for everyone! We rehearse on a Monday evening from 5pm to 7pm in the Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, which is followed by a drink in Old Bar to chat and make some new friends. The repertoire we sing consists of a wide range of genres: we perform contemporary and choral music, as well as theatre and rock pieces and while we have some ideas for new music for the upcoming year, we pride ourselves on our collaboration as a choir, so we are always open to suggestions for music for the three concerts we take part in every year. Outside of our rehearsals, we have exciting plans for socials throughout the year for Chorus in addition to the LUUMS-wide events, which are great ways to meet new people and get to know the other singers you’re performing with! Apart from our weekly Old Bar trips, we’ll make sure to have some non-drinking socials as well so that everyone can join in. So if you feel like beating the Monday blues by making some music together, then come along and join in for some fun to start your week!

Katie Riding (she/her)

Conductor

Katie is a third year Music and Music Psychology student from Manchester. She has played piano since she was 7 studying recently under Madalina Rusu. She took up singing as a second study shortly afterwards. This provided fantastic opportunities to perform in multiple European cities and the Royal Albert Hall. Before studying at Leeds, Katie was involved in vocal activities ranging from Chapel choirs to Musical Theatre shows, even being nominated for a NODA award. While studying at Leeds, Katie has been part of Sinfonia, Chorus, the Symphony Orchestra and the Symphonic choir in LUUMS, as both a pianist and vocalist. She has also enjoyed playing in several pit bands with university performance societies. She is very excited to be conducting LUUMS’ Chorus this year.

Leah Welsh (she/her)

Manager

Hi! I’m Leah and I’m one of the managers of Chorus this year. I’m a 3rd year BA Music student and I cannot wait to manage the fun, non-auditioned choir that Chorus is! I have been a member of LUUMS since the last academic year and it will be amazing to help this society grow by having a space for non musicians to just sing and make friends!

Joe Edwards (he/they)

Manager

Joe is a third year Music and Music Psychology student and is looking forward to managing Chorus this year alongside Katie and Leah! They have been singing in various choirs for 14 years and had had the opportunities to perform at prestigious venues like St Paul’s Cathedral. In addition to choral singing, he has been involved in musical theatre productions and is currently exploring the world of operatic singing. As well as performing as part of Chorus last year, Joe has sung (and played) with LUUMS Chamber Choir, Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Symphonic Choir; he has really enjoyed the social side of being involved with LUUMS, especially Chorus, and hopes to bring more entertainment and fun to Chorus 23/24.
