We are Leeds University Union's Music Society and have 10 different ensembles varying from our Symphony Orchestra to Composers Collective.

LUUMS String Orchestra 2023/24
String Orchestra is one of the four auditioned ensembles within LUUMS, and consists of around 30 passionate violin, viola, cello and double bass players. Having only existed for one year so far, we have already covered an impressive range in repertoire; from Vivaldi's Cello Concerto in B Minor to Adagio for TRON by the esteemed Daft Punk, even branching out into a few student compositions! We hope to continue this trend going into the new academic year, pairing classic orchestral pieces with some more unconventional choices to keep things fresh and exciting.
String Orchestra, as one of the smaller ensembles in LUUMS, prides itself on the strong sense of community and kinship it fostered amongst its players. You can expect plenty of socials: trips to Old Bar, bowling and theme park excursions, for example. String orchestra is the perfect place to find like minded musician friends in a welcoming and exciting environment. It is not all fun and games, of course. The ensemble performs 3 concerts in Leeds a year; one in each semester, and often goes on tour with Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Orchestra to share our beautiful music with places such as Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belgium! Therefore, String Orchestra requires true dedication and passion from each member to produce music to a high standard!

Flora Stinson (she/her)
Conductor

Flora (she/her) is a second year music performance student from Liverpool and has been playing the violin since she was 5 years old and the flute since she was 7. she has previously studied under the Suzuki methods before spending 2 years at Junior RNCM in Manchester. An experienced orchestral player, Flora has been involved in many different orchestras of different standards from the NYO Inspire, to RNCM youth orchestra, the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and is currently a member of the Opera North Youth Orchestra. Always having an interest in conducting, Flora started volunteering conducting an amateur local concert orchestra in Liverpool before receiving lessons from Jill Hyde and at RNCM. Always having a passion for music education, Flora has been a music teacher on and off for 2 years before going to America to be a music counsellor in a New York summer camp. She plans to specialise in conducting or musical education in the future. Outside of music, Flora enjoys watching (but not participating) in rugby and also aims to become an Otley run/ pub connoisseur. She can’t wait to meet everyone and work with you all this coming year!

Uma Dell (she/her)

Uma is a third year history student from London, and has been part of LUUMS since her first year at Leeds. She started playing the violin at 4 years old and has been part of many orchestras since then, such as the Chineke Junior Orchestra who she reached the semi finals of Britain's Got Talent with! She has also performed on stages such as the Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall with her local youth orchestra. Uma plays the viola and sings. She is a reluctant musical theatre enthusiast, performing the role of Coach Bolton in the Devonshire Hall production of High School Musical in her first year, and being in the pit band for the Performing Arts Society showcase last year. Having thoroughly enjoyed being participating in symphony orchestra and strong orchestra last year, Uma is very excited to be managing string alongside Alisha and Flora.
Alisha Narendran (she/her)

Alisha is a second year medical student at Leeds. She grew up in Birmingham and started learning the violin at age 4, piano at 6 and voice at 12. She has completed Grade 8 in all three as well as a DipABRSM in voice. She has been part of the National Children’s Choir, CBSO Youth Orchestra and CBSO Youth Choir. In doing these, Alisha has performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Proms. She has also had solo pieces commissioned for her, premiering at the Elgar Concert Hall. Alisha also enjoys playing more informally, as part of jazz trios in cafe’s and raising money for charity through Christmas busking events. Outside of music and medicine, she enjoys competing in badminton tournaments and open water swimming. Alisha thoroughly enjoyed being a member of Symphony and String orchestra in 2022 and is eager to work with her amazing new team and make String orchestra a lot of fun!
