LUUMS CHAMBER CHOIR 2023/34

Chamber Choir is LUUMS’ auditioned vocal ensemble consisting of 16-20 singers, whom all share a passion for choral singing. We aim to perform a wide variety of repertoire from early renaissance polyphony to juicy contemporary music, and everything in-between. Chamber Choir is an amazing opportunity to meet a group of likeminded people and perform a variety of exciting and high standard repertoire.

We perform in termly concerts as well as additional year round performance opportunities, recently including features on Channel 5 and ITV! These performances culminate in a European Tour to locations such as Amsterdam, Prague, Copenhagen and Budapest.

We rehearse Tuesdays 19:30-21:30 in Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, usually followed by a trip to Old Bar!

Oliver Heath (he/him)

Conductor

Conductor, Oliver, is a 2nd year music student from Northern Ireland. His principal study is composition, though he enjoys conducting, singing, and occasionally playing bass. He holds an Enhanced Choral Scholarship at Leeds Cathedral, under Tom Leech, allowing him to regularly conduct their various choirs and work in the National School Singing Programme. As a Conductor, and as Concert Manager, Oliver is committed to diversifying repertoire and programming more works by living composers. His Uni highlights so far have included; Singing on Channel 5 with Chamber Choir 22/23, Conducting MT’s production of ‘Into the Woods’ and attending the Belgium and Prague tours with ’Swymph’ and Chamber Choir last year.

Amy Howe (she/her)

Manager

Amy is a recent BA Music graduate from Birmingham. Coming from a very musical family, she began her journey playing the violin at age 7, going on to play in many ensembles such as the CBSO Youth Orchestra. She later discovered her love for singing when she joined the CBSO choral family, singing with both the Children's and Youth choirs. She has been involved in so many exciting choral projects since, including singing at the BBC Proms and on European tours. In Leeds, she held a Choral Scholarship at the Cathedral for 2 years. Along with violin and voice, she also dabbles (quite unsuccessfully) in flute and piano. Aside from her musical activities, Amy enjoys cooking, and baking whatever new vegan goodies she can find! Having absolutely loved being involved in LUUMs throughout uni, being part of all three choirs as well as Symph and depping for String Orchestra, she cant wait to get stuck in managing the choir next year!

Alessio D'Andrea (he/him)

Manager

Alessio has just returned from his year in industry and is in his final year as a (BSc) Biological Sciences student. He began singing and playing when he was 7 in central London joining his local primary school choir and orchestras. When he entered secondary school, he joined the senior ensemble groups playing the violin and clarinet. He also joined the schools Schola Cantorum, the liturgical choir of The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. With the Schola Cantorum he has sung at many London venues including Westminster Abbey, St John’s Smith Square, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall and sung/soloed in works including Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s St Matthews Passion, Handle’s Messiah and the Monteverdi’s vespers. He has worked and soloed alongside groups such as The Monteverdi Choir, His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts, St James' Baroque, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gabrieli Choir. Alessio made his Royal Opera debut in 2014 as Shepherd Boy (Tosca) and sang as the Third Boy (Die Zauberflöte). His other opera work includes La bohème, The Magic Flute with the English National Opera, and in the children’s chorus for Turandot and Die Frau ohne Schatten. He has also taken part in recordings of many soundtracks for films such as Paddington Bear, Transcendence, and Age of Adaline. Alessio is excited to be back at Leeds and ready for another fun year with LUUMS this time working as part of the wider exec for the first-time managing chamber choir.
