LUUMS CHAMBER CHOIR

LUUMS Chamber Choir is the auditioned vocal group of the music society, aimed at bringing together a group of 20-25 students who all share the same passion for music and choral singing.

We aim to sing a wide variety of repertoire, previously performing works by Allegri, Tchaikovsky and Poulenc, whilst also incorporating more modern pieces. Chamber Choir is a chance to enjoy singing of a high standard within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We perform concerts at the end of each term and in between these like to take part in evensongs around Leeds as well as other events like Christmas carolling. These performances all lead up to the main event of the year; a European tour! Previously, the choir have visited cities including Copenhagen, Budapest and this year are going on tour to Krakow, Poland.

The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and rehearsals are usually followed by a trip to Old Bar in the Union for a chance to socialise with fellow choir members. We like to arrange a variety of socials throughout the year for a chance to get to know each other, these often include cheese and wine nights, or if you’re up for a party, trips to the union club night on a Friday!

Auditions for Chamber Choir 2019/20 have now closed. Thank you to everyone who auditioned and congratulations to this year's choir!

Jenny Podić

Manager

Jenny Podic is originally from Torquay, Devon and plays the piano and violin and has been singing for many years. She has been singing in choirs since the age of five and playing the violin in orchestras for fourteen years. At the age of fifteen she played the marimba in the ATC National Concert band and won various National marching band competitions.

Now a fourth year Medical student at the University of Leeds, Jenny enjoys singing opera and taking part in musical productions. Last year was her first year in LUUMS’ Chamber Choir, which she found incredibly rewarding. Singing the Alto part was an exciting new challenge and she greatly looks forward to managing this friendly and hardworking choir during the next academic year.

Chris Hughes

Conductor

Christopher Hughes (20), originally from Nantwich, Cheshire, has played the piano ever since he was 5 years old. During his sixth form education at Chetham’s School of Music, Chris studied the piano with Mr John Gough, taking up the Organ as a second study with Mr Christopher Stokes, Organist of Manchester Cathedral. During this time, he also became interested in choral music and first began singing in choirs.

Now a second year student of Leeds University studying Physics, Chris continues his musical education primarily at Leeds RC Cathedral as Organ Scholar under the tutelage of David Pipe. In first year, he sang with (and occasionally accompanied) LUUMS’ Symphonic Choir. In the following year, Chris had the privilege of accompanying the Symphonic Choir further, singing in the Chamber Choir, playing in LUUMS Symphony Orchestra, and also conducting for the Opera Society in preparation for performing Gilbert and Sullivans’ “The Pirates of Penzance”.

Conducting the Chamber Choir is a great next step in Chris’ journey as a conductor, and he looks forward to leading this fantastic choir in the year to come.
