LUUMS BRASS BAND 2023/24

Hello everyone, we’re Brass Band - the best Luums ensemble! As an open ensemble, everyone playing brass or percussion, no matter your experience can join us. You don’t even need to play your first instrument! While we’re a very open and chill group, we’ve also claimed the title of most eventful ensemble in Luums. A Luums Brass Band calendar is fully packed with events and concerts throughout the year. In addition to the winter, spring, and summer concert with other Luums ensembles, we do collaborations with local Brass Bands for concerts as well as collaborations with Warwick and Durham University Brass bands for a Tri-Uni concert. Christmas carolling is important to us, and the University calls upon us for the University Carol Service every year. (They clearly agree that Brass Band is the best ensemble in Luums). Our biggest event is a travel to the annual UK UniBrass competition. Last year we were in a 3-way tie for 1st place in the trophy section, but alas, tiebreaker dropped us to 3rd place… This year we’re not going to share 1st place with anyone! Concerts aren’t the only thing on our roster. We throw regular socials events, including an annual Pancake Day social. For anyone interested in marching, we’re also thinking of adding the local WhitFriday competition to the roster, where we march through several towns across Lancashire. And after practices we always hang out at Old Bar in the union to relax with some pints/lemonades. If you’re interested in an ensemble that’s cool, classy, eventful, (and sometimes childish), then come to our rehearsals in the School of Music Tuesdays at 17.00-19.00.

Conductor

Hi I'm Matt. I'm 20, and a second year Music Multimedia and electronics student from Milton Keynes.

My free time is split between gigs, gaming and pints. I've been playing trombone for 12 years and in brass bands for over 10, so I thought it's about time I gave conducting a go (apologies in advance).

I'm hoping to keep brass band fun and inviting this year, so even if you're like me with no experience, come along and we'll at least have a laugh.

(We're also gonna win UniBrass though)

Manager

Hey, I'm Thea-Alice, 21 years old and grew up playing in a marching band in Norway. I've played trombone for over 15 years🤯 in local bands, orchestras and big bands. After finishing music college, I left Norway for Leeds to study Religion, Politics and Society.

In my free time I like watching Ghibli movies, collect hats, play pokemon and read webtoon, but can't stay away from music for very long. I loved being a member of luums Brass Band, SWO and Concert Band last year and want to help keep our incredible brass band at its best.

My goal is to bring my passion for marching bands into managing next year's Brass Band. I might even take us to Whit Friday.🫢

Hamish Sanger-Davies

(he/him)

Manager

Hi, I’m Hamish, a first year natural scientist originally from the South of Worcestershire.

I grew up playing in various school ensembles, local big bands, and my home brass band, Tewkesbury Town Band, on various instruments but settled on Bb bass.

In my free time I like to take long walks with my dog in the Cotswolds, play cricket, and (like your typical tuba player!) go to the pub. This year I’ve been a member of Brass Band, Symph, SWO, and Concert Band within LUUMS, and an active member of the university’s 3 big bands, one of which I am MDing next year.

My goal for brass band next year is to make sure everyone has the best time possible and allow the band to flourish!
