LUUMS BRASS BAND

Brass Band is an open ensemble for any and all brass or percussion players regardless of your standard - lots of our players don't play their first instruments when they're with us! Being one of the busiest ensembles, we travel all over the UK for concerts and compete at the National University Brass Band Championships, UniBrass. This year we’ll be competing in the Shield section, but we’re ready to regain our place in the Trophy section! It's a fantastic weekend for everyone involved and not to be missed! This year we will also be hosting the Tri-Uni concert with Warwick and Durham universities, where we’ll have the opportunity to perform some of our repertoire, as well as playing some joint pieces with their Brass Bands too! Our first concert of the year will be our joint concert with Chamber Choir on Wednesday 9th December in Clothworkers Concert Hall. As well as concert performances, we are frequently called upon for official University functions, including opening ceremonies for new buildings and the University Carol Service. The University clearly agrees with our unofficial status as the best ensemble in LUUMS... We can't forget, however, our amazing socials that take place throughout the year, especially our legendary Pancake Day social, a true Brass Band Tradition. Above all though, we love to hang out as a Band. We're an extremely sociable ensemble and our post rehearsal pub trips to Old Bar are always a great time for a drink or for a chat. We're really excited for the coming year and are always looking for new members and would love to see some new faces at the start of the year!

Rehearsals for Brass Band have now started. Don't worry if you missed the first couple of rehearsals, just come along and join in!

Join our facebook group if you are interested, for more information.

Come along to our TASTER SESSION on the 29th of September!

Simeon Lowe

Manager

Simeon is a 3rd year MA/BA Music & Music Psych student originally from Doncaster. After playing cornet in the LUUMS brass band for the past 2 years, he decided to take up the tuba this year which he thoroughly enjoys.  Simeon is excited to begin fundraising for brass band and to organise our annual TriUni concert with Warwick & Durham Uni which will be held in Leeds this year. He is also looking forward to taking brass band to the annual UniBrass competition which will be held in Sheffield.

James Heaton

Conductor

James Heaton is a trumpet player starting his 4th year of the BMus Music Performance course at Leeds. Hailing from Manchester, James is no stranger to the brass band tradition, playing with Besses Boys Band for many years, before continuing the tradition at University. James recently returned from study at the University of North Texas, where he worked with trumpet legends Caleb Hudson and Philip Dizack, as well as brass band, euphonium maestro, and guest conductor of the Cory Band, David Childs. A lover of all music and genres, especially brass band, James is excited to share what he has learned with the band, and hopes his passion will be shared with new members and old friends.

Ellie Williams

Manager

Ellie is a second year music student from Deal in Kent. She’s played the trumpet from the age of 10, wanting to find something a bit louder than the piano! She has loved being involved in Brass Band, Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Orchestra in her first year, meeting so many lovely, crazy people, and she can’t wait to meet and chat to more new people and make them feel as included as she had been. Ellie is also very excited for all the Christmassy concerts and busking that’s coming up, the TriUni concert in Leeds this year and the trip to Sheffield for UniBrass (and of course the weekly post-rehearsal pub trips!).
